PLANTS

This term, we have started our Plants topic in Science. Firstly, to look at the functions of roots in plants, we have planted a broad bean seed in a jar to watch the roots grow. We love checking on them each day and recorded how many roots we have. We were also amazed to learn that a seed does not need soil to germinate as we all predicted before we started!

ROCKS, SOILS AND FOSSILS

Our Science topic this term is Rocks, Soils and Fossils. So far, we have talked about where we might find rocks and have looked at lots of different kinds of rocks and sorted them into different categories. We especially liked looking at the rocks through magnifying glasses and finding out about our birth stones.

Which rocks erode the most?

Today we did an experiment to see which rocks eroded the most. We planned, carried out and evaluated a fair test which different kinds of the 3 types of rock (Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic.)

The experiment involved rubbing 2 of the same rocks together to see how much had eroded after 2 minutes. We then repeated this with a different kind of rock and compared them. We made sure we wore safety goggles because of the dust and made sure it was a fair test by rubbing the rocks for exactly 2 minutes using the same force each time. We had a great afternoon and our written work was amazing. Well done Year 3.
